Summary/Abstract: A typology differentiating seven types of encounter between religions is offered by the author. The encounters are 1. war, 2. antagonism, 3. indifference, 4. negotiation, 5. dialogue, 6. cooperation, and 7. synthesis or merger. These encounters are not necessarily mutually exclusive; at times more than one form of encounter takes place. The author points out the primacy of one of the most recent forms of encounter: dialogue. Detailed analysis of dialogue is provided including the "Dialogue Decalogue" by Leonard Swidler, the "Guidelines for Dialogue" by Mojzes, and the major articles of "The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief."
