Summary/Abstract: This paper is a result of field work that I conducted in Nis (Serbia) in September 2001 for the period of three weeks during an internship with UNOPS (United Nations Office Program Services) under the 'City City' program. I was provided with a Serb-Italian translator by the Italian Non-Governmental Orgainsation ICS (Italian Consortium Solidarity) who were responsible for the program in Nis and who also supervised my work and research on the field. I was able to hold around one hundred interviews with Serb-speaking Romanies, mostly living in Crvena Zvezda Mahala and Boegrad Mala Mahala (Nis) (the former being the worst reduced Mahala in Nis and the latter being the biggest and most populous), with Nis resident Romany and non-Romany intellectuals, with representatives of Romany and non-Romany local NGOs and with Serb psychologists working at formal state schools. I collected documentation and used various secondary sources and available literature for background reading and corroboration of information obtained.
