Summary/Abstract: The study is an attempt to analyze the complex discoursive amalgams in which gives rise to the ideology of Illyrism, the Czech philological Slavism, the Polish romantic messianism, and the Russian Panslavism, deeply rooted in the Bulgarian and Croatian historiography, literature and folklore. The imaginary realm of the Slavic mutuality is placed in the context of European identification strategies as a framework for cultural identities and the formation of new geopolitical realities. The study traces the Illyrian model focused on the narrative of ancient origin, territorial boundaries, linguistic unity, national mentality, geography, national authorities and local saints. A special reference is made to the intermediary role of the different ideologemes for transforming existing traditions into permanent ethnonationalist identities, as well as the emergence of contradictory ideas of center and periphery in the historical fate of the Balkan peoples.
