Summary/Abstract: The article deals with issues related to the history of the museum as a center of culture, science and enlightenment. The analysis of the nature and specifics of the operation of museums on the basis of Evolutionary approach revealed features of their development at every stage of human history. Conclusions based on the facts of the history of Western European and national museums.
