Summary/Abstract: The author of the article focuses on the problems that concern the coronym Italy and its equivalent in Polish, Włochy. He describes the meanings and assumptions about the etymologies of this coronym from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. He compares the use of the variants Włochy and Italia in Polish in view of cultural references to the origin of the two forms of pre-Latin dating back to antiquity, in the case of Italia, and the Germanic and Slavic ones, in the case of Włochy, often confused with its paronym Wołochy. He reports the problem of transonimisation of the coronym Italia in the formation processes of anthroponyms and crematonyms and their pragmatic issues in communication. He extracts a sample of classic and new antonomasias of the toponym Italia. In the case of those new, in most occurrences, he notes the assignment of stereotypical values enclosed in the image of antonomasias in form of evocative advertising slogans.
