Summary/Abstract: The choice of verbal tense depends on establishing by the transmitter the relation between the moment of enunciation and the moment of reference of the message. Their coincidence means the present tense (Bertinetto). Nonetheless, it is necessary to remember that the present tense is able to describe past events and thanks to that characteristic is often used in narrative stories. To understand the aim of this choice we analysed various types of texts proving that the present tense is applied to the narrative strategy to: emphasise the position of the narrator (“Il fu Mattia Pascal”), underline an important moment (“Se questo è un uomo”), describe (“Vita”) or drag the reader into the story (“Gli italiani in Polonia nei secoli”) what provokes an impression that he is a real witness of the described events.
