Some New „Scythian” Monetary Findings from the Istro-Pontic Area

Summary/Abstract: The Scythians communities existent in the Dobrudjan territory represent an ethnic presence worthy of note in the second half of 1st millennium BC., especially in the Hellenistic period. The richness of ancient coin circulation in today Dobrudjan lands was expanded by the coin issues of six rulers – quiet not mentioned by the ancient authors – who controlled the lands of today Dobroudja during still not yet clear precised period of the Hellenistic epoch. Although more and more rare in monetary discoveries from the Central and Northern Dobrudja (Romanian contemporary Dobrudja), still information’s regarding some appearance of “Scythian” coins in conditions more or less clear are topical. The author presents a number of five bronze coins which belong to the “Scythian monetary” and which were beaten for the rulers Kanites, Ailios, Charaspes and Akrosas. If the piece from Kanites comes as a result of an preventive archeological research (at Ovidiu, Constanța County), the other coins come from fortuitous discoveries (Bărăganu, Constanța County; Piatra, com. Mihail Kogălniceanu, Constanța County and Central Dobrudja). The present article represents yet another contribution to enriching the file so complex and varied of the “Scythian” coins of Greek origin, and the activity of the mints of the colonies from the western shore of Pontus Euxinus in the period of 3rd-2nd century BC.
