Summary/Abstract: This paper presents findings from research on the adoption of ‘stratified and differentiated didactic units’ (Caon 2006) based on Italian songs. The didactic context of testing –an Italian as a Second Language multi-level class– and the respective theoretical underpinnings are examined, together with some examples of this practice. The outcomes of a quantitative analysis of the data gathered through monitoring are thought to provide evidence of how this practice may prove useful both in managing different levels of proficiency in a class, as well as enhancing motivation based on the concept of pleasure (Balboni 1994).
