THE COORDINATION OF THE SMALLER UNITS THAN PHRASE

Summary/Abstract: It has been proved that the grammar of Albanian can be described in terms of the structure of syntagm, we intend to treat the connection of syntax constituents (syntagms) in the paratactic plane in The Lord of the Rings film script. Generally speaking, it is well known the fact that syntactic units within a particular phrase can be related to one another in two ways: syntagmatically or non-syntagmatically. The syntagmatic relationships include the links of two or more elements to form a single grammatical construction. These syntagmatic relationships involve two types of links: paratactic and hypotactic. The paratactic term is defined to mean each element has equal status in the phrase and no element depends on the other element (Peterson 1998, 2004). Hence, the paratactic is the syntagmatic relationship that involves the type of coordination. Coordination in comparison to subordination links components smaller than phrases, such as syntagms and words. On the other hand, subordination does not create links between two limbs smaller than the phrase (Huddleston et al. 2002). In addition, in this paper by using the immediate constituent analysis (ICA), we intend to explore the coordination of units smaller than the phrase, so, the coordination of the syntagms, the way and the type of coordination, the constraints appearing in their rankings, and the ratio of the components within the syntagms. The coordination is formed only by those syntagms that have the same syntactic categories (Dhima 2005), but according to Huddleston et al. (2002: 1276), syntactic structures that do not belong to the same grammatical category can also be coordinated. This corpus (film script The Lord of the Rings) has been deliberately selected, as the film is a verbal, written and visual product, all conclusions rely on the speaker's context and viewpoint, on the basis of which he constructs the syntagms, so selects the constituents.
