Summary/Abstract: While the efforts to understand and resolve the east-southeast problem is stepping up, the impact of religious identity on the events, through religious beliefs in general and perceptions of sects in particular, which are the indicators of the people’s understandings of religion, is hardly studied within the sociology of religion. Many reports regarding the problem have been released; however, the religious-sectarian composition of the region remained untouched in them. On the other hand, PKK often refers to the Sunnism, Shiism, Alevism and Zoroastrianism in its documents. It has been exploiting the sectarian hassles in propagating and consolidating its ideology. The problem of terror and violence in the eastern and southeastern cities has spread to the metropolitan cities through the migration of the Kurds. This study attempts to analyze the reasons, impacts and consequences of this problem in terms of religion and sects. The main purpose of the study is to answer the following questions; whether there is a relationship between the locals’ understandings of religion/sects and terror, and how this relationship, if any, affects the events in the region. After a number of reports on the eastern-southeastern problem are briefly evaluated, the findings of the chapters, “Statistics on Sects” and “Statistics on the Religious Orders (Tarikat) and Congregations (Cemaat)” of a report, “The Sociological Analyses of the Southeastern Problem (Technical Report)”, released by Bilgesam, are dwelled on, and accompanied by comparisons with data from other relevant reports and studies.
