Summary/Abstract: Serbia was first target of Mehmed the Conqueror after the conquest of Istanbul. Before him, Turkish armies occupied Serbia several times. Peace of Szeged signed in 1444 ensured dominance of Branković, the Serbian Despot, on the Serbian lands once more. Serbian Kingdom remained impartial in the Second Battle of Kosovo in 1448 while not refraining from occupying some Ottoman lands taking advantage of its hard times. The case was not different after ascension of Mehmed the Conqueror to the throne. Branković, the Serbian Despot, sent envoys to Mehmed the Conqueror after the conquest of Istanbul, submitted his obedience to the Ottomans while he was also seeking alliance with the Hungarian king. Ottoman Sultan believed that expedition to Serbia was necessary to ensure permanence of the conquests in the Balkans and to ensure dominance on Central Asia. Therefore, expeditions were made to Serbia during the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror.
