Summary/Abstract: The article raises the issue of hierarchical and charismatic gifts in terms of their theological, ecclesiological, theological-spiritual and pastoral context. Its point of departure is the rediscovery of the charism during the Second Vatican Council and in subsequent parts it follows briefly the development of the charism after the Council, not only within consecrated life. Further on, the article recalls its position, including hierarchical gifts in the ecclesiology of communion. In the essential part of the article, the author considers the role of charisms in building up the community of the Church through monks, priests and laymen. He takes into account their relationship with love – the greatest gift of the Spirit - and with its communion function. After explaining the mutual relationship between communio and missio of the Church, he goes on to present the role of charisms in the attainment of the mission of evangelisation through the clergy, monks and laymen. He also presents orienting charisms towards a deeper participation of the faithful in the holy sacraments.
