Summary/Abstract: In Poland, successful economic transformation brought a dynamic development of family entrepreneurship. Family businesses in Poland play a significant role in the economic and social sphere. Most of the family businesses are entities belonging to the sector of small and medium enterprises. They base on the interdependence of the proprietary family and business, thus creating a social capital. On the other hand, in Poland, there is a very low proportion of social trust in people-to-people relationships, which can be traced to its historical heritage, but it is also contemporary. Transformation processes did not affect the level of social capital. The subject of the article is reflection on the positive correlation between the low level of social capital in interpersonal relations and the state authorities with processes of development of small and medium enterprises in Poland. The article contains an interpretation of the results of the research conducted in 2009–2010 and 2014–2016.
