Summary/Abstract: Learning by project is one of the pedagogical tools currently being used in French modern language classrooms as part of the ‘action approach’. It allows the teacher to innovate in the classroom and it allows the learner to be a social actor, to participate in a collective project with other learners in an authentic communication situation. We will summarize the official instructions given by the French government concerning this approach and give the theoretical framework used, the definition and the characteristics of Learning by Project. We will also give the results of a poll carried out with fifty modern language teachers working within the French school system.
