Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with some questions associated with social inequalityproblems. The notion of digital gap is discussed in detail and factors influencing the gap areanalyzed. The gender aspect of digital inequality is in the focus of analysis. Based on the secondarydata and the authors' own sociological surveys, the gender gap in the area of access to informationand communication technologies is studied. It is pointed out that although the use of informationand communication technologies generally promotes levelling out of gender inequality, the sociologicalstudies nevertheless give evidence about the existing difference in men's and women's level ofinvolvement into activities associated with the use of information and communication technologies. Apossible explanation for this is the smaller representation of women as compared to that of men inhigher education institutions that offer educational programs in the area of information andcommunication technologies. The materials of the paper are of practical value for specialists dealingwith problems of social inequality, relations of the state and the civic society, and the development ofthe contemporary information and communication technologies.
