Summary/Abstract: On the night which celebrates the handing of the keys of Belgrade to Prince Mi- hailo Obrenovic Simeon Hadzija opened Simeon’s home to “provincial underground dwellers”, so he could, in the spirit of his Christian ideals, feed and water the needy and the poor. Beggars abused Hadzija’s kindness and their feast turned into the demolishing other people’s property and robbery. It turned into one of the turbulent collective scenes that have been repeated in the history of the Njegovan family ever since its mythical origins. The sum of impressions created by Pekic’s episode acts as an intention to remind the reader of the famous Bunuel’s movie Viridiana (1961), in which, as in the episode of The Golden Fleece, the focus is on the religious hero who collides with reality, a victim of circumstances created by himself. Based on the meaning that is realized in Pekic’s novel through Viridiana, it is much clearer than from the episode Floral Thursday observed separately that our author is, as well as Bunuel, the opponent of altruism and Christian sacrificial love based on its own self-negation. It is also clear that Pekic and the aforementioned director share doubts about the concept of repairing the human soul by Christian teaching, goodness and mercy.
