He was born in 1865 in a village in Banat, today known as Ostojićevo, named after him. He died in 1921 in Vienna. He spent the longest part of his life in Novi Sad. He played an important role in the history of the significant and cultural institutions: Serbian Orthodox Great Grammar School and Matica srpska in Novi Sad, Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje. He was an associate member of the Serbian Royal Academy in Belgrade. He significantly contributed to the development of musicology and the history of Serbian literature. Many aspects of his life and work have been studied only in fragments and deserve to be researched much more thoroughly.
