Summary/Abstract: The article deals with one of the most important and significant cultural-historical pe-riods of the Slavonic world, namely Cyril and Methodius’s mission in Moravia and the issues connected with the creation of the Slavonic alphabet and the use of the Slavonic language in church services. The emphasis has been put on the idea that the creation and adoption of the Slavonic liturgic practice is part of Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher’s cultural programme as differentiating significantly from the emperor’s diplomacy. Attention has been paid to the issue of why the Byzantine emperor agreed on the mission to Moravia as well as the implementation of the cultural programme - Constantine and Methodius were sent to a country far away from the borders of the empire and out of the empire’s interests. The conclusion is that the mission of the two brothers was very successful. But what was most important is the fact that the two broth¬ers managed to implement their program through their disciples in Bulgaria due to the support of the Bulgarian ruler.
