Summary/Abstract: This paper applies a method that draws upon the principles of modelling and analys-ing complex systems in order to explore two stories written by Heinrich Boell, “Als der Krieg ausbrach” and “Als der Krieg zu Ende war”. It uses the black box method in order to examine entities with unfamiliar structure when the entrance and exit parameters are available. What passes at the entrance (exit) gives a sense of the contents. In the “entrance - black box - exit” chain, the two stories are identified as the end components. The intertextual references between the two prove that Heinrich Boell employed the war theme as inter-meaning - by means of deliberate silences and comparing the state of the world and the individual before and after the conflict, and that the use of the black box effect is intentional.
