Summary/Abstract: The thinking of hermeneutic circle is one of the most fundamental, but up to now contentious doctrine, which is going back to a long tradition in the history of hermeneutics. In my following paper, I attempt to reconstruct Heidegger’s and Gadamer’s dialogues on the circle (Zirkel, Zirkelhaftigkeit), highlighting how they contributed to the discovery of the whole issue in a new light. (I.) First of all, I briefly recall the conceptual background of this context rooted in antiquity whose criticism led to the two different hermeneutic accounts of circle. (II-III.) Then I try to expound how Heidegger transformed the classical conception of the circle as a mode of thought, firstly in 1927 when he introduced his famous discussion of the hermeneutic circle in 32 § of Being and Time. Furthermore, I will investigate that in dialogue with Heidegger, Gadamer reconceptualized the previous starting point in his 1959 article entitled Vom Zirkel des Verstehens in a Heidegger Festschrift and the chapter on the hermeneutic experience of his Truth and Method where he entirely reviewed the hermeneutic circle in the context of historicity of understanding and rehabilitation of prejudice. (IV.) Finally, I would like to show the consequences which generated a debate between Habermas and Gadamer.
