Summary/Abstract: The intention of this article is to investigate the development of a diversity of dyed, fancy and japanned rush and cane seated chairs during the late 18th and 19th centuries in terms of the customer base, their intended household use, materials used for surface treatment, terminology, cost differentials, centres of production and innovation, based upon records such as inventories, billheads, pattern books, 'estimate sketch books', dispatch records within 'waste books', petty ledgers, advertisements, trade cards and trade or commercial directories.
