Diffusion of Ritual pits from Territory of Bulgaria during 1st mill. BC

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to describe diffusion of ritual pits on the territory of Bulgarian lands during the 1st mill. BC. More than 60 archaeological sites that contain negative structures with ritual function were excavated in the last seventy years. Most of the sites (47) are situated in Southern Bulgaria as the highest concentration is observed between Maritsa and Tundza rivers. Almost all of this sites are pit fi elds and they are not connected with Thracian burial customs. Some of them contains hundreds ritual pits situated in the small territory of few square kilometres. During Early Iron Age 29 sites were formed. Most of them (22) have continued to be used in Classical and Hellenistic periods when 18 new were dig in. The collected information showed quite different situation in Northern Bulgaria. The complete number of sites there is 15, from which founded in burial mounds and directly connected with burial rites are 8 pits and 7 are ritual pit fields. From Early Iron Age are known only 2 sites with pits founded under burial mounds. For the next period (Late Iron Age) the number have increase to 6.
