Summary/Abstract: In his texts, Czech writer Jan Čep (1902–1974) thought out and planned using proper names. His short stories and novellas are mostly authobiographical and set in his native village in Central Moravia. That is why Čep changed personal and local proper names but his intention had always been that the proper names point to certain people and places. Choosing names, Čep often used their original meaning (Hrabal = Greedy, the surname of a greedy farmer, Sedmimostí = Seven Bridges – the name of a city in which several branches of the Morava river meet).
