Summary/Abstract: The paper presents an analysis of private letters by writers from Moravia and Silesia. The aim is to show the influence of spoken language on the established cohesion of standard written texts. It examines the territorial differences in the usage and types of non-standard elements, thus contributing to the discussion on the expansion of common Czech to eastern regions of the country. Attention is paid to regional differences in the function of standard Czech as well ass to sociolinguistic aspects. The article is based on a corpus analysis of more than 300 letters which come from the corpus of correspondence texts created at the Institute of the Czech Language at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University Brno.
