Summary/Abstract: The article suggests one of the modern variants of reading a novel by a well-known Irish writer that appeared at the turn of the century, on the very border not only of two centuries but also of two different visions of the world. The work is viewed, first of all, as a novel in where many aesthetic lines of different epochs intercross. The analysis focuses on the process of crossing various boundaries which contributes to the peculiarity of Joyce’s artistic world and the concept of personality embodied in it. The analysis conducted on the narrative, plot-compositional and ideological levels allows to reveal the essential features of the author's artistic world. Creation of a broad interpretation field provides an opportunity to study the main problems of coexistence of the whole and the part, the world and the hero in the novel structure. The main subject of research is the specificity of the structures and boundaries destroyed by the hero, as well as his attempt to create some kind of an alternative universe. The article presents not only the novel's place in the historical and literary context, but also its place among other Bildungsroman novels of this time.
