CZECH -POLISH CONTEXT IN SILESIAN LITERATURE

Summary/Abstract: The Czech and Polish literary context represents a specific situation resulting from the many years´ meeting of the two national cultures in Silesia, Czech and Polish. It has been developing under complicated conditions, which influenced cultural life in the border area, where – besides Czech – the Polish language has also had its position. In the 19th century a Slavonic programme even formed itself, influenced by Herder’s thoughts and formulated in favour of Czech and Polish national interests. It could be seen in the activities of Polish writers such as Pawel Stalmach and Josef Lompa or Jan Winkler on the Czech side. Revivalist tendencies in Silesia had been gradually changing and the beginning of the 20th century already witnessed the specific character of Polish literature tied with Silesia that was later labelled as the literature of “Zaolzie”. That is how Polish literary tradition in the Těšín region was set in train, represented by a number of names (Morcinek, Fierla, Zegadlowicz, P. Kubisz, later Prze-czek, A.W. Berger and others). Apparently, the two national literatures constantly coexist as could be seen in the works of the authors inspired by the Těšín region (J. Zogata, B. Trojak). Although creating a natural parallel to the Czech literary region of Silesia and Northern Moravia, Polish literature shows all characteristic features of Polish national literature.
