Summary/Abstract: This article deals with formulae of water in oral lyrics, as well as with spatial models that they develop. This contributes to the wider insight in the mechanism of its functioning out of the epic context. In lyrics they retain characteristics of complex and dynamic cultural patterns that create firm poetic and syntactic junctures, but also adapt to the specific non-centric structure, marked by relations of coordination, not subordination. At the semantic level the meanings of water are abstracted and at the same time their original meanings are kept in the polysemantic structures of the songs. As a poetic element they exist at multiple levels (a level of the song, of one genre, of the oral genre system as a whole) and have compositional function. The lyric composition can be constructed upon the formula (a maiden swim in the water waiting to see who will rescue her). The formulae influence the poetic elements and its syntactic context by adapting to the context and at the same time changing it. Diversity of the water occurrence in oral lyric shows the expressive and cognitive potentials of the folklore system.
