Summary/Abstract: Luigi Pirandello casually described his play Six Characters in Search of an Author as a „comedy in progress“ (commeda da fare). That author’s note served as a guideline for this analysis. In the chain of previous links that show the history of formatting of this play, two novellas stand out: The Tragedy of a Character (1911) and Conversations with Characters I an II (1916). While in novellas imaginary characters entered conversations with Narrator, in the play those characters stepped out in front of a theatre company, with the similar demand: to became heroes of a literary work.
