CREATION IN THE FRAME OF MYTHOLOGY AND RELIGIOUS HISTORY: THOUGHTS FOR SISTINE CHAPEL CEILING FRESCOES

Summary/Abstract: Research on the topic of creation is being carried out in every period of human history since the beginning of primitive societies. Mankind tries to give meaning to life by researching the creation of the universe and the creation of mankind. The more questions regarding to his/her own creation are answered, the more an individual’s acceptance of his/her own role in society and shaping his/her life accordingly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the process of creation within the framework of history of religions and mythological sources. Michelangelo Buonarroti's fresco on Sistine Chapel in Vatican was evaluated in respect to creation and references for Mesopotamian civilizations, Old and New Testaments. During the evaluation, each of the periods of creation were handled separately. Traces of Sumer mythology, Babylonian mythology, Greek mythology, Egyptian mythology, Old Testament and New Testament were investigated in these scenes. During the research, literature analysis was made with available resources by using the disciplines of mythology and religion and thereafter applying content analysis. The research was limited by Mesopotamian civilizations, Old Testament and New Testament sources.
