Summary/Abstract: During many decades, the written and spoken word of Bogdan Popović, a renowned university professor and literary theoretician, was a measure of value and evaluation of art tendencies in our country. His influence on the formation of music life in the Serbian capital during the first half of the 20th century was also significant. Himself having musical education (he played the violin from childhood), he took an active part in the concert performances, both as a soloist or as a member of the chamber ensembles. He was one of the founders of Collegium Musicum, remaining its president till his death, as well as of the first music journal Muzički Glasnik. Among Popović’s numerous texts about various artistic phenomena, there are texts about music. They are usually occasional texts which he wrote for specific purposes: on the occasion of Giuseppe Verdi’s death and the hundredth anniversary of the demise of Ludwig van Beethoven, then on the occasion of the foundation of the first musical journal, as well as of the music association Collegium Musicum; he also prepared a speech for one of the performances of that association. Moreover, he noted down his impressions about music in the theoretical treatises about literature, and the thoughts in which he tried to capture and explain the phenomenon of uniqueness in artistic creation in his notes on comparative esthetics are particularly interesting.
