Summary/Abstract: The present article deals with unofficial naming against the background of personal names. This topic was chosen due to the existence of extensive corpora of illustrations in Romanian and foreign specialized bibliography, but also due to the absence in the aforementioned literature of studies on unconventional anthroponymy. Methodologically, the paper makes use of theoretical precepts that pertain to philosophy of language and pragmatics, as well as of resources that are specific to the main field of research, onomastics. The phrase unofficial anthroponyms designates the following name categories: nicknames, hypocoristics, bynames, pseudonyms, and user names. Unofficial anthroponyms can transcend the individual level of language, thanks to their frequency and recurrence in conversations. Personal names of this kind are defined by a wide variety of expression and content; they are open constructions, as regards their numerical and semantic potential, since what the locutor says is much less than what the allocutor perceives/infers.
