Summary/Abstract: The author of the article begins by presenting applied linguistics in Poland, a field of study chosen mainly by experts in modern language studies, but not very popular among specialists in Polish studies. In Poland it was applied linguistics for foreign language teaching that gave rise to the emergence of glottodidactics, understood as the theory and practice of foreign language teaching and learning. Polish glottodidactics, which had been for many years on the periphery of Polish linguistics, began to gain importance after the year 2000. The author discusses the relationships between glottodidactics and traditional areas of study in Polish linguistics, such as descriptive grammar or the history of the Polish language, but he also pays attention to the role of communication sciences, pragmalinguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and the current language policy.
