Summary/Abstract: Sterija and Nušic rank among the best known comic writers in Serbian 19th — and 20th century literature. However, this is not the only thing they have in common. It is perhaps a less well-known fact that they both wrote manuals on rhetoric. Sterija’s manual was not published during his lifetime. Today, we can say with great certainty that, so far, Sterija has written the best unpublished and Nušic the best published manual on rhetoric in the Serbian language. With respect to rhetoric it is interesting, furthermore, to look at these two writers’ literary work and draw comparisons. Thus it becomes evident that some typically literary procedures employed both by Sterija and Nu- šic, such as description, narration, hreia and discussion, also serve the purpose of being rhetorical practice texts. The very same procedures that, indeed, have been used both for teaching purposes and in literature since antiquity.
