Summary/Abstract: The complex personality of H. Ch. Andersen was a topic of numerous psychiatric and psychological discussions, even hasty conclusions about his texts on the basis of his life. Although he has successful other works, primarily travel-books, he is above all known as a writer of fairy-tales and short stories. Andersen drew his inspiration from various sources, most successfully transforming the models from oral literature, adapting them to the moral principles of his time, but without avoiding the tragic and the problem of evil. Although usually understood as a writer of fairy-tales for children, his texts were also intended for adults, and some of them could be essentially comprehended only by adults. In time, his work experienced various aspects of reception, translation, interpretation, elaboration and staging. Together with Kierkegaard, he became the most important older Danish writer, and the versions of his work have been already separated from him and have been treated as a public heritage similar to oral literature.
