Summary/Abstract: Joyce’s novel Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man and Kiš’s novel Attic are most frequently presented as initial books which laid the foundations for the prose worlds of the mentioned writers. With her paper, the authoress tried to view these novels as separate works, as the first novels of their authors, through the matrix of the novel about the artist and, finally, as the novels which offer a possibility for comparative reviews and interpretations. That the matrix of Kunstlerroman was disintegrated in the sense that it was opened to be modified, Joyce showed almost fifty years before Kiš in his novel Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man. The novel about an artist in time also became the novel about the artist’s art. Attic is not a Kunstlerroman in the narrow sense, but it is a special valeur of the novel about an artist which reflects both the artist and his art, as well as the (post)modern exterior, all of these as an unbreakable monad, in Spinoza’s words.
