Summary/Abstract: National parks have special significance among numerous forms of protected nature and cultural heritage. This does not only result from their number and size, but also from their multiple significance for science, culture, schooling, upbringing, education, recreation, tourism and protection of natural ecosystem. Experience in the world, including our country, should be used more and in a better way, in order to emphasize polyvalence and multiplication of useful functions of national parks for the benefit of the majority. A national park is an area of exceptional beauty where ecosystems are not spoilt by actions of man. With their specific morphological characteristics they represent a national treasure for current and future generations. Đerdap, with its series of specific characteristics, stand out among the five national parks in Serbia. It was inaugurated in 1974 and occupies an area of 63680,45 hectares on the territory of the boroughs of Golubac, Majdanpek, Kladovo and Negotin. The heart of Đerdap national park is the 100 km long composite valley of the river Danube. The highest number of tourist attractions on the whole flow of the river Danube is concentrated here. The nature, archeological sites, remains of roman buildings, sacral objects, the lake, dams, hydro-electric power stations, villages ans towns, people and events emphasize the polyvalence of this part of the Danube basin. This is why it should be given priority in development plans.
