Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the relation between Borisav Stankovic’s literary work and traditional culture — the works and non-verbal models on which the traditional culture is based (rituals, customs, beliefs, concepts about the world) — as well as how the elements of traditional culture in Stankovic’s work relate to the characteristics of modernism. Painful discrepancy between the past and the present, wishes and possibilities, body and soul — which is the basic thematic and semantic preoccupation in Stankovic’s prose — is often expressed in the works of oral literature, primarily through lyrical poems which are quoted in their entirety or in fragments, structuring a parallel story about the internal experiences of the characters and shaping some of the deep meanings of the work.
