Summary/Abstract: Jean Genet’s Querelle de Brest was published in 1947 along with 29 line drawings by Jean Cocteau. The two met in 1943 when Cocteau is already at the height of his fame and Genet just a young writing apprentice. Their collaboration on Querelle de Brest marks the culmination of a relationship that will only last for another three years during which Genet is progressively distancing himself from Cocteau’s influence and conceptualization of homosexuality in order to find his own way to articulate same sex love. The tension between Genet’s narrative and Cocteau’s illustrations in Querelle de Brest reflects the differences between the two writers and their own personal vision of homosexuality.
