Summary/Abstract: This paper tries to prove the idea that the Albanian national conscience was a construct prepared by the Toske elites of the Ottoman administration, who at the end of the 19th century and beginning of 20th century were active in promoting ideas and interest in the political and cultural activities during those years. Said this, it is impossible to talk about national conscience without having in mind the role that Albanian politicians of the Ottoman Empire have played in promoting Albanian Nationalism. What was the role of the Toske elites in the Ottoman Empire and what did they do to develop the sense of identification among Albanians? What kind of impact did have the orientalist discourse in a society with a majority of Muslims that were part of the empire for more than 400 years? Based on a constructionist approach we will try to answer these questions, focusing more in the discourses of Albanian politicians who after independence became symbols of Albanian Nationalism.
