Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this text, written from the perspective of “sociology of sociology” and “sociology of medicine”, is an attempt of introduction to the Polish sociological debate “critical perspective” ‒ issues that are since the beginning for example in the classical sociology of American and Western European versions of medical sociology and ask the question: why this approach theoretical and methodological directive and practical imperative of action is permanently present in the Polish sociomedical discourse. We are going to sketch the historical roots and evolution of the critical orientation using selected examples drawn from general sociology and then try to show the application of this approach in the classic Polish medical sociology. It seems that the presentation of “critical thinking”, its origins, character, values and limitations is particularly important and desirable in terms of progressive economic crisis and its micro-, mezo- and macrosocial consequences.
