Summary/Abstract: The article presents how career concepts have evolved along with economic development and changing conditions in the functioning of an organisation. In addition to the traditional career model based on upward promotion in the hierarchy of an organisation, the author presents new concepts for a career, such as “boundaryless”, protean, intelligent or spiral, which are characterised by a greater individual responsibility for one’s professional activity. Furthermore, it indicates the role of the organisation, which has ceased to exist only to provide an employee with “job security”. In order to gain loyalty, trust and commitment from employees, it should ensure their continuing professional development.
