Summary/Abstract: This article aims at highlighting the main meanings of the term ”discourse” that are evidently accepted in the latest studies of linguistics. As it is in inherent relationship with notions such as sentence, statement, language, text and context, the discourse is defined dependent on the actual situation of speech, carried out at an actual level of language and characterizd by a certain content known as sense/meaning.Merging the two notions/concepts text and discourse, Vlad(2003) brings into linguistics the unusual concept of iceberg-text (or text/discourse). It is a class characterized through the quality of the (verbal) product, part of a communicative process (always bipolar, dialogic), but also assisting a complex cognitivre process called textual semiosis. The discourse is a statement that has textual qualities, yet it is carried out in such a situation that implies the presence of participants, institutions, a place and a time. If compared to language, the discourse make a reference to a world that it claims to be describing, since it happens within a place and time setting, while the language is a virtual system, unrelated to a time setting and basically providing certain codes. The discourse belongs to the field of linguistic exercise as well as to the social exercise, since asserting something implies alocutor/speaker and a auditor/listener, the former intending to influence the latter.
