Summary/Abstract: The paper considers etymology, semantics and specific features of spelling of the proper name Ben Jonson, W. Shakespeare’s friend and literary rival, in the context of his linguistic views, reflected in his “Grammar” (1640). Special attention is paid to the spelling variant as Ben:Jonson (with a colon after the first name and without <h> symbol in the family name and its initial letters as <I/J>). The analysis of this proper name enables to reveal, on the basis of the English language material, some interesting facts, relevant to the understanding of a number of significant problems dealing with the English language orthography standardization, as well as to point to some important changes in the system of English punctuation suggested by B. Jonson, referring them to the context of cultural and historical realities of the XVIIth century.
