Summary/Abstract: On 6 April 2016, the EU agreed to implement a major data protection reform by adopting the data protection reform package, including the General Data Protection Regulation (replacing the twenty-year Directive 95/46 / EC) and the Directive for police cooperation. On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation became directly applicable, providing a single set of rules directly applicable in the EU Member States and guaranteeing the free movement of personal data between these countries. Citizens can benefit from better protection of their personal data and gain better control over how companies deal with them.
