Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author explores the historical development of the deposit contract (depositum) in the ancient world. The historical analysis of deposits in the ancient law in general shows that the law of the Far East and Ancient Greece recognized some form of deposit but that this complex legal instrument was first defined and developed as a method of securing contractual obligations in the Roman law. In the second part of the paper, the author provides an overview of the deposit contract in the law of the Republic of Macedonia. In particular, the author analyses the legal nature of rights and obligations of the contracting parties as well as the related protection instruments. The author draws a parallel between the Roman deposit contract and the contemporary deposit agreement. Finally, the author draws respective conclusions on the overall significance and prospective development of the deposit agreement and its further application in legal practice.
