Summary/Abstract: The war between Russia and Georgia of August 2008 discloses two aspects of Russian foreign policy: Russian political goals in the ex-soviet space, closely related to the perpetual Russian geopolitical vision throughout the 20th century, one of Russia’s dominance on the so-called “vital space of Russian security”; as well as the broader international context: the way post-soviet Russia considers herself within the international system, particularly in her relations with the western alliance. The following essay will focus on examining these two conceptual pillars of Russian foreign policy. This article will continuously combine global geo-strategy with empiric observation. It will combine these two basic parameters of the analysis of international relations for producing a realistic and concrete approach with the aim of seeing the world as it is rather than as it should be.
