Summary/Abstract: Being faced with the problem of inadequate implementation of international labour standards and particularly the system of monitoring their application by the Member States, the International Labour Organization (ILO) adopted the Declaration on the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998). This Declaration was made in an attempt to oblige the Member States to observe the fundamental labour principles and rights at work on the basis of their ILO membership. In this article, the author elaborates on the rationale for adopting this ILO Declaration in light of certain developments preceding its adoption as well as the impact of diverse factors on this Declaration.
