Summary/Abstract: In this article we discuss the issue of obtaining a doctoral degree. We point out the advantages and disadvantages of the proposal of acquiring a industrial doctorate in implementation, nowadays discussed in Poland, in the context of changes in the perception of the university and its functions. The doctoral training requirements set forth in the European Qualifications Framework and in the Polish Qualifications Framework indicate the need for students to acquire not only extensive knowledge and understanding of the academic achievements (assigned to a specific area of knowledge) and research ability but also the ability to transfer knowledge and research results to the social and the economic sphere. This opens the door to a different way of getting a doctoral degree.
