Summary/Abstract: Lewis Carroll’s Alice has been an inspiration for many visual artists. The first who illustrated it was John Tenniel and his drawings were a part of the first official edition of the book. His work does not only act as visual accompaniment to the text, but rather, in certain instances, it functions as text. The illustrations explain certain remarks and events from the text, which are not explained by the text itself. That is an example of a charming intervention of the visual to the literal, with the aim, to explain the worlds of the two novels. Salvador Dalí, Maggie Taylor, and Zdenko Bašić are artists whose illustrations in their own innovative way represent Alice, through the principles of illustration.
