Summary/Abstract: Compared to other scientific disciplines, contemporary political theory remains in the early Middle Ages. Literary theory and, to a lesser extent, the study of history have accepted the challenge of feminist science, which has been thriving for over a decade, and has integrated many of its findings. For most political theorists, however, this step to a serious confrontation with the category "gender" – i.e.: with the social institutionalization of sexual difference – is still tob e expected. No political theory can legitimately claim to be called "humanistic" until it has taken up this challenge.
